North of Scotland
Sailing Squad
Junior/
Youth Race Training Opportunities
in the Highlands
In this tab you will find information on NoSSS whose aim
is to develop racing skills for young sailors from the North of
Scotland.
Recent years have seen 6 coaching
events per year, 3 in the spring and 3 in the autumn. The preferred boat classes are:
Optimist, Topper and Laser (Radial).
As
you may know, RYA Scotland (RYAS) organises a series of National Junior
and Youth Race Training Squads. But you may not know that RYAS also
organises a group of Area Squads, with a training level lower than the
National squads. These Area squads are designed to offer an opportunity
for progression - to young sailors who aspire to improve their sailing
and racing skills either for club racing or national squad.
RYA
Scotland Council reorganised the Area Squad structure in 2002, and we
currently have RYAS approved Area squads in the west and east of
Scotland, but of more interest to clubs in the north of Scotland, there
is also a North of Scotland Area Squad (NoSSS).
Some
of the benefits of attending NoSSS:
-
Fully qualified and professional coaching provided
-
Structured, safe environment
-
Weekends held in different locations throughout the Highlands (we
will travel anywhere if there is sufficient demand!)
-
A chance to socialise and make new friends
-
Costs kept to a minimum (£35 per weekend)
-
Complements club race training, not replacing it
-
Can generate good local publicity for your club
-
All ability levels catered for, from those that have just started
club racing to those applying for national squads
If
there are young sailors in your club who you believe might be interested
in the NoSSS opportunity, then please ask them to contact one or both of
the people below:
-
RYA Scotland High Performance Manager (HPM), Roy McCubbin,

I
look forward to the possibility we may be able to assist more young
sailors to achieve their aspirations.
Yours sincerely, Paul Bartlett (NoSSS, Head Coach)
RYAS administer event registrations and fees. They also arrange and pay for
the coach/coaches and contribute to the hosting club's running
costs.

2007/08 are reported at the following link -

Information on Scottish sailing squads
is also provided by
